Alkalising Green Juice with Mint and Lime

You know what, we should all be juicing more often. There’s really no reason not to, and there are SO many health benefits to it. We’ve had a cold-pressed juicer for around six years now. It was a gift from my mum, a prolific juicer herself. She has a cold-pressed vegetable (mainly) juice at least once a day using organic produce.

There are some important things to note when juicing at home or when buying juice out. Unfortunately most of the places where you buy juice when out will have a fairly standard commercial juicer that makes a really loud noise and throws the pulp from the produce in all sorts of directions when being pressed through the juicer. There’s a difference between normal juicers and cold-pressed juicers. I learned this a while ago and to this day will only ever use a cold-pressed juicer for one reason. All the vitamins and minerals in the produce you juice stay intact. Unlike other juicers that have a system which uses heat. When heat is used in the process of juicing, it begins to kill some of the vitamins that you would get in a raw vegetable for instance.

I would say however that juicing is more beneficial no matter what juicer you use, instead of not juicing at all. With that, if you have been thinking of investing in a juicer, make sure you get the cold-pressed variety.

Some other tips when juicing, try and use organic where possible. No one needs a concentrated concoction of all the chemicals that are sprayed on conventional produce. Especially the ones on the dirty dozen list – I buy organic all the time, and if it’s not in season, I do without!

Juice is best and has the highest amount of nutrients when consumed as soon as it is made. One other thing to keep in mind is to always wash your juicer as soon as you use it. It may seem like a process and these aren’t “rules”, but if you can help to get the most out of it, then why not? If you want to make it ahead of time, go for it. Again as I said before making a juice is better than no juice at all.

One last thing I would suggest is doing at least 50% of vegetables in the juice. That way, you don’t overload on natural sugars and add more antioxidants and alkalising properties to your juice. Hope you enjoy this alkalising green juice with mint and lime. I love the balance of the watery vegetables with the sweetness of the apples, hit of ginger and freshness of the lime and mint. I think it’s balanced well. Feel free to add some ice to it if you find it a little strong or just drink the juice straight.

Alkalising Green Juice with Mint and Lime


  • 2 celery sticks (leaves removed)
  • 1 medium Lebanese cucumber
  • 1 small green apple
  • 2 stems of fresh mint
  • 1 small knob (about 1 cm) of ginger, skin can be left on, just wash well
  • 1/2 a lime, skin left on if organic


  1. Cut produce into the right size to fit through the feeding section of your juicer.
  2. Put all ingredients through the juicer and serve immediately.
